An internal audit is important as it is a review of your organisation’s processes to ensure you are following your documented procedures and ensures the organisation complies with the ISO standard.

It helps identify gaps or non-conformities before the external audit, and it’s a requirement of most ISO standards.

Think of it as your internal check-up.

Who can carry out an Internal Audit?

Ideally, internal audits should be carried out by someone trained in auditing who is independent from the process being audited.

If this isn’t feasible, then someone who is able to remain impartial while conducting your internal audits in-house, or you can engage an external consultant to perform the audits.

How often should internal audits be done?

The frequency of an internal audit will generally be specified in your documented procedures and depend on the complexity of your organisation and the results from previous audits.

To prepare for your internal audit, please visit your Atlas platform Atlas - The Citation Platform where you can find an internal audit template, go to Documents>ISO Template Library, where you can type internal audit into the search bar.

Some organisation's audit quarterly or by department on a rolling schedule.
